5. Protecting your Savings
Making sure that your energy retrofit or new green building continues to deliver savings is an important part of any project. Poorly calibrated or maintained equipment and poor operating practices or inattention can quickly eat into expected savings. Some high rises, for example, have done extensive water conservation retrofits, including installing high efficiency toilets. But mistakes in replacing toilet flappers have led to water savings quickly disappearing down the drain. Good monitoring systems can be worth their weight in gold, by alerting you to take corrective action if systems are not performing.
Humber College, Mohawk College, and Fanshawe College offer accreditation courses for condominium managers that include building maintenance issues:
Humber College offers a similar course in conjunction with the Institute of Housing Management
Seneca College offers courses in Building Systems Engineering Technology that includes a focus on energy efficiency. It also offers a part-time course for Building Environmental Systems Facility Managers
You can also get professional assistance with commissioning and system calibration from Energy Management Firms. See the Better Buildings Partnership's list
